About this deal

A review copy of Agatha Christie - Death on the Cards was provided to TheGamer by Modiphius Entertainment. In addition, should the murderer reveal everyone’s secrets the murderer wins while should the murderer’s secrets be revealed the murderer loses.

Everything needed to play Death on the Cards fits neatly into a 4×6 inch box, making it easy to travel with. The most appealing thing about Death on the Cards is its licence, but get it to the table and there’s little that captures the essence of a thrilling whodunnit. If you’re looking for some mysterious family or party games, there are plenty of others you’d be better off spending your money on. They’re all there: Poirot and Marple of course, Tommy and Tuppence Beresford and my new favourite – Lady Bundle Brent. These social deception games have become staples of many game nights thanks to being easy to learn and relatively quick to play. This is nice because it prevents that scenario where someone is killed early in game and is forced to stew while waiting for the next game. Agatha Christie: Death on the Cards was created by Bos taurus Diceworks (with support from Auroch Digital) and published by Modiphius. Each player is given 3 secrets at the beginning – you might not be the murderer but you’ve all committed various social faux pas and we all want more details on your involvement in the ‘vicarage incident’ .

Players work cooperatively to solve a murder, using their detective skills to unmask the culprit and prevent their escape. That includes events which let you point your suspicions, swap cards, or slow down the killer's escape by reusing cards from the discard pile.

Although most of these are tongue-in-cheek misdemeanours (you lied about being heir to a made-up kingdom, for example) one person's hiding the fact that they're a cold-blooded killer. In addition, the ‘Accomplice’ card in larger games helps even out the balance and keeps the pace moving. It’s a game that parents or other adults could pick up and play with a child with relatively little fuss, and simple enough that I don’t think kids would have much trouble playing amongst themselves.Although a challenge, knowing from the start the identity of the ‘Murderer’ takes much away from the excitement. Pick up the latest issue of the UK's fastest-growing gaming magazine in print or digital here or subscribe to make sure you never miss another issue. In this card-driven game players work co-operatively to solve a murder, using their detective skills to unmask the culprit and prevent their escape. Agatha Christie has long been hailed as the “Queen of Crime,” and her two most famous creations – the sharp-minded spinster Miss Marple and suave Belgian sleuth Hercule Poirot – have become some of the most enduring characters in all of detective fiction. Since players can play them at any time and they stack, this eventually turned into three players throwing down Not So Fast!
