About this deal

When her ex-husband picks up the boy for a two-week camping trip, Ellen invites a causal acquaintance over for a long day of languid sex. I’m going to have to hunt through my London TBR (now safely arrived) to see what other O’Brien gems I squirrelled away. Predators pounce as politicians dither: With the very survival of the euro in doubt, Ireland's fiscal position is heading in a very Italian direction warns Marc Coleman". It's been 4 days and this short book put me in a reading slump, so it, indeed, fulfills the promise of making August a wicked month. By the time I'd finished this I was feeling so depressed I headed off into the kitchen to hide all the sharp implements and cracked open another bottle of wine.

The dialogue is awful, character development is non-existent, and there is not one worthy sex scene in the book. However, she soon discovers that independence blurs into loneliness, especially when she receives some heart-breaking news .

Bored London house wife Ellen, 28 years old, has divorced her husband and lives in London with her eight-year-old son. She escapes to the French Riviera and meets a new range of people, all the time realising that she is yearning for something that cannot be experienced through meaningless sex.

The title is regularly mentioned to this day by commentators on topics ranging from business and politics to fashion and weather. As needs must with novels of this type it was quite short, only 138 pages long, so if you are unsure of it at least it will not be a lot of time spent.

The trilogy was banned in Ireland because of its broke the silence on sexual matters and social issues during the repressive period in Ireland history after World War II. The writing isn't up to O'Brien's usual high standard and I was left wondering what the message of the book was.
