About this deal

The soft, worn-in feel of his shirt under my palms, the breadth of his shoulders, the golden skin of his neck, scant centimeters away from my face as I hugged him back. Expect lots of references to popular romcom films, songs, and musicians (the songs on Wes and Liz's soundtrack are listed at the end of the book). I get that it’s part of her character definition, that she’s growing throughout the book and that it’s a YA. The more Liz schemes with him, the more she’s forced to examine the difference between what she thinks is good for herself and what actually is— and part of facing that means facing her past. Now that he’s back in town, Liz will do whatever it takes to get on his radar—and maybe snag him as a prom date—even befriend Wes Bennet.

The characters are funny, the banter they shared was well written and relatable, and the romance was sweet. The movie aspect was cute, I liked that every chapter opened with a quote from a very famous rom-com and I admit to have watched most of them, since it is a movie genre I really enjoy. Not preachy but definitely not subtle, this movie will be seared in your brain more than any after school PSA. The annoyingly attractive next-door neighbour might seem like a prime candidate for romantic comedy fantasies, but Wes has only been a pain in Liz’s butt since they were kids. I worked to give him my top-shelf smile, even though I was dying over the fact that Wes had screwed up my meet-cute.But while Wes and the Potters had enjoyed things like flinging mud into my hair because it made me scream, Michael had been doing things like identifying leaves, reading thick books, and not joining in on their torture. That being said, BETTER THAN THE MOVIES is a self-fulling prophesy of a title, because it ranks right up there with some of the best.

It would have been great to have more background establishing the conflict between Liz and Joss, it lacks a bit of emotional impact because the reader does not get to know Joss very well. We were probably going to be late because of our impromptu hallway meet-up with Michael, but it would totally be worth it. It’s actually Liz promising Wes unlimited access to that parking space that makes him agree to help her get Michael to notice her. My mother wouldn’t be there to take pictures and get teary as her baby attended the final dance of her childhood, and nothing made that hit home quite like seeing Joss’s mom do those things for her. My favorite thing about music—when you played it loud enough through good headphones (and I had the best)—was that it softened the edges of the world.Again, as I continued listening to the book I realized how this was (to my understanding) all part of the idea of the story and the growth and maturing we see the female character go through. He must’ve sensed a stalker in his midst, because the slo-mo stopped, the birds disappeared, and he looked right at me. The annoyingly attractive next-door neighbor might seem like a prime candidate for romantic comedy fantasies, but Wes has only been a pain in Liz's butt since they were kids. I would definitely recommend you listen to this book, it is a easy listen, predictable but in a comfy way and the story is complex enough to stay with you. My mom had made her famous cheesecake bars, and Michael had met us at the door and offered us drinks like he was a grown-up.

They reminded me so much of various Taylor Swift early songs, if that makes sense, the ones from Debut and Fearless, and I really have to say this book reads like a Swift song. Meaning that if Liz wants Michael to finally notice her, and hopefully be her prom date, she needs Wes.But through late night talks in the back yard, stolen glances and slips in time where it feels like Wes’s annoying habits aren’t staying all that annoying, Liz sees something else: a future she didn’t see written in her script. And while the other movies in the trilogy kept that spectacle, nothing quite compares to seeing the Shire for the very first time. Even though he’d gotten tall and mannish and a tiny bit hot since grade school, Wes was still the same immature boy who’d “accidentally” burned down my mom’s rosebush with a firecracker. But the issue lays with his eyes already being on someone else—and the fact that he still thinks of her as “Little Liz.

They even steal from Harry’s own mother—who is also addicted to (legally prescribed) drugs and television.Another thing that bothered me was how she kept saying the male MC is the “bad boy”, but honestly he was such a great male character. My childhood crush moved in slow motion, with tiny blue birds chirping and flitting their wings around his head as his golden hair blew in a sparkling breeze. Today her braids were all pulled back into a ponytail, but instead of looking messy like when I wore a ponytail, it showed off her cheekbones.
