About this deal

Ooh I love a dystopian thriller and books that make me think about the ways in which we are messing up the planet. Which then bumps into a cruise liner, which they zip line down to, then walk across a nuclear submarine on to the beach. And of course, speculating about each of their futures, but I was wrong on all accounts (which is great, who wants a book to be predictable? Struggling to cope on the frozen landscape, scientists start genetic experimenting to increase the chances of survival.

Though he isn't present in every scene, he conveys each piece of the story leading up to the murder as if he were an omniscient narrator, capable of accessing every character's interior perspective. The two form an instant bond which is immediately tested when aliens arrive in the skies and give humanity an ultimatum: humankind has 30 days to migrate to Antarctica or die. But there’s virtually no machinery and no human is strong enough to extract it by hand, much less withstand the deadly cold. The survivors of the human genocide have created a new society on Antarctica and, in the process, have begun and continued to go down a dangerous path of genetic experimentation to create a new ice-adapted human that will ensure the survival of the human race.A volcanic eruption is quite another, for, as the journalist who does a framing voice-over narration for Brooks’ latest puts it, when Mount Rainier popped its cork, “it was the psychological aspect, the hyperbole-fueled hysteria that had ended up killing the most people. So, they end up creating a super powerful alien – of all things (weren’t they put here in the first place by aliens? Faced with extinction and a rapidly dwindling population, the remaining scientists and world leaders come to the conclusion that humanity cannot rely on natural evolution to save them; and work begins on engineering a new species. The story is beautifully written with colourful characters you instantly fall in love with and the concept is totally novel and intriguing.

A staggeringly beautiful alien armada had arrived, the moment many had pondered but few had ever thought would happen. Many of them are seriously abhorrent and need to be kept in secure quarters, deep in the ice below the surface. In the midst of entertaining us with those fantastical creatures, he also manages to teach us something about genetic engineering, both the science involved and the ethical considerations our world wrestles with today.
