Those narratives will overlap in many, many ways, but there will inevitably be differences too, and that’s the wiggle room for interpretations to begin to bubble up. The saga of Boris Johnson and Brexit frequently crops up in this author's narrative as a vivid, if Lilliputian instance of the same phenomenon. Again he engages in some leaps of logic when he says that on a visit to Portland, a black-owned restaurant which displayed images of American soldiers and first responders was targeted by rampaging antifascist mobs: live ammunition was fired into the restaurant, which is obviously unforgivable, but Murray cites no evidence that the perpetrators targeted the restaurant for the reason he gives.

In The War on the West, Murray argues that a new cultural war has arisen to denigrate the West and western values. On the other hand, while the defiant stance of his book necessitates a certain combativeness of tone, Murray seems at times to flirt with the notion that any criticism of Western society or foreign policy is an expression of a sinister, vengeful, anti-Western worldview. There is something very disturbing about this reductive, inquisitorial reaction to even the least objectionable artefacts of Western history. There are prestigious universities considering eliminating the end of required notation reading, conducting, studying classical composers, (they’re all white) and of course, their music, due to this stress. Once again, Murray has started by positing some plausible assertions without actually citing sources—of course, my experience may not be representative, but I think it would be fair to say that many Brits don’t learn about these subjects at an advanced enough level to have truly grappled with them.

I was taught theory, western civilization, learned to play EVERY orchestra instrument, and already could read musical notation prior to auditions a plenty. Or to point out that neither the 1 nor the 0 are western inventions and that without them, computer science would be a little different. But Wiesenthal, though a member of the same ethnos, was too far removed from the situation to pass comment in such a way.Naturally, this sort of vandalism was condemned and commentators complained that objections to the statue should’ve been handled civilly (Murray doesn’t even say this much). The depth of absurdity that has and is occurring on a daily basis to diminish our democracy, values, historical accuracy and position as the greatest nation on earth is frightening. On the topic of literature, Murray is somewhat indignant about attempts to “decolonise” curriculums, which often just means adding some modules on race and identity and taking a little bit of focus away from the usual suspects. The sections on cultural appropriation seemed correct to me, I dislike the movements trying to create ultra rigid barriers around cultures and insistences of cultural purity.
