About this deal

The belt has tabs that grip the darts, pulls them from the drum and holds them in place until you are ready to fire.

The age range is appropriate though, these darts don't half sting when they hit, and 6 year olds as a rule simply don't have the ability to be safe or accurate. While I think it looks quite cool, the first thing that struck me was that it is seriously lacking in tactical rails – one compared to compared to its main rival’s four. Extend the middle finger of your trigger hand to press the release button, then you can use your other hand to pop out the drum. So, let’s pop some fresh batteries in, and see how it matches up to my favourite full-auto blaster, the RapidStrike. although I trust you'll be more careful than my children, and hopefully you don't have house rabbits who think Nerf darts are super-tasty.

The other thing you notice is how much quieter and smoother it is than the older full-auto blasters too. On the one hand, they last ages – I’ve had at least half a dozen lengthy NERF wars with my kids without needing to change them – but on the other hand, they’re not the type of batteries you just have lying around in a drawer. So while the Hyperfire’s technical performance is excellent, I found the practicalities let it down. Unpacking the Hyperfire you will find, the blaster itself, a 25 round drum and 25 darts to feed into the drum.

The only problem is that it does jam, especially if your darts are a little worn, and it got worse as the batteries got older.

Without all of that nasty orange plastic in the way we can get a clear view of how the electrical system is layed out. We’ve already got one Nerf, with precious few foam darts left, so getting this to try was very well received by my boys, and even my teen had lots of fun with it.
